Gateway M520 Keyboard Installation Instructions
Note: Before beginning, review electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions.
Removing the keyboard
- Turn off your notebook.
- Disconnect the AC adapter and modem and network cables.
- Turn your notebook over so the bottom is facing up.
- Remove the battery.
- With a small Phillips screwdriver, remove the two keyboard bezel screws and put them
in a safe place.
- Turn your notebook over so the top is facing up.
- Open the LCD panel to the fully opened position so it lies flat on your workbench.
- Insert the small flat-blade screwdriver under the center of the keyboard bezel and
gently pry it up.
- Lift the back edge of the keyboard bezel, then slowly rotate it toward you so it lies
face-down on top of your notebook. You may hear small snapping sounds as the bezel
comes away from your notebook.
Important: Inserting a piece of cloth between the screwdriver and
keyboard and notebook case will help prevent damage to
your notebook.
Caution: When removing the bezel, be careful not to break off the
tabs along the edges of the bezel.
- Lift the keyboard bezel connector using two fingers and remove the keyboard bezel
from the notebook.
- With a small Phillips screwdriver, remove the two keyboard screws and put them in
a safe place.
- Lift the back edge of the keyboard slightly, slowly push the keyboard toward the LCD
panel to release the retaining tabs, then rotate the keyboard toward you so it lies
keys-down on top of your notebook. Be careful not to damage the LCD panel.
- Lift the keyboard connector using two fingers and remove the keyboard cable. Be
careful not to touch or damage any other components.
Installing the keyboard
- Place the new keyboard keys-down on your notebook with the space bar away from
you.
- Insert the keyboard plug, on the end of the keyboard cable, onto the keyboard
connector. Press down on the keyboard connector latch to lock the connector in place.
- Rotate the keyboard toward the LCD panel until the keyboard is almost face-up.
Important: The outside of the keyboard plug goes around the
keyboard connector. The plug is correctly oriented if the
cable is not twisted.
- Insert the tabs on the back edge of the keyboard into the corresponding slots along
the top of the keyboard tray area. You may need to press down along the front edge
of the keyboard to seat the tabs into their corresponding slots.
- Gently press the keyboard down until it is flat all the way across. The keyboard should
easily fall into place. Be careful not to damage the LCD panel.
- Replace the two keyboard screws.
- Reconnect the keyboard bezel connector.
- Replace the keyboard bezel. Press down on the bezel in several places until it clicks
in place.
The bezel is correctly mounted when you can run you finger along the bezel and find
no loose spots. The bezel should be flat all the way across.
- Close the LCD panel, then turn your notebook over so the bottom is facing up.
- Replace the two keyboard bezel screws.
- Install the battery.
- Connect the power adapter, modem cable, and network cable, then turn on your
notebook.
